OSHA Background Screening Policy
OSHA has implemented an online background screening program provided through USA Hockey. All coaches (head and assistants), managers and other individuals who have "regular and routine" access to children (anyone under the age of majority) must consent to be screened through this online application and complete the screening process. Further, it is OSHA’s policy that all member associations affiliated with OSHA adopt this Screening Policy as a condition of their affiliation.
All coaches must complete the screening process before taking to the ice for the current season. Managers and other individuals required to be screened must complete the screening process by September 30 of the current playing season. Any individual who begins an activity after September 30 of the playing season that would require the individual to be subject to the OSHA Screening Policy must complete the screening process within three (3) days after beginning such activity.
Any Coach, Manager or other individual who is required to be screened per OSHA’s SCREENING POLICY who continues to coach, manage or otherwise participate in any OSHA activities without the proper screening certification will be referred to the OSHA Disciplinary / Dispute Resolution Committee for appropriate action.
USA Hockey has a new national background screening policy starting with the 2020-2021 season. For members who were last screened through their Affiliate after April 1, 2019, for the 2019-20 season, their screens will be valid for the 2020-21 season, and will not need to be screened under the new system until prior to the 2021-22 season. If a member’s most recent screen is from prior to April 1, 2019, the member, if in a position that requires a background screen, will need to be screened under the new system in order to participate in the upcoming 2020-21 season.
All new screens submitted through the new NCSI national screening program after April 1, 2020, will be valid for two seasons. For example, a screen submitted and approved on April 15, 2020, will be valid through the end of the 2021-22 season, which is August 31, 2022. The screen will cost $30.
